The Woodlands’ annual Arbor Day Tree Giveaway is set for Saturday, January 29, 2022, from 9 a.m. to noon at Rob Fleming Park. The Woodlands celebrates its 46th year of giving away seedlings, making it one of the longest-standing community traditions. Since 1977, more than 1.5 million seedlings have been distributed. This year’s event is produced by The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department with support from Chevron-Phillips Chemical, Centerpoint Energy, The Woodlands GREEN and Woodlands Water Agency.

Twelve varieties of native canopy and understory trees are available.  Canopy trees comprise the upper layer of the forest and typically reach heights of 40 to 90 feet. Select from American Sycamore, Chinkapin Oak, Loblolly Pine, Lacey Oak, Texas Pistache and Green Ash. Understory trees range from 8 to 20 feet and are generally more shade tolerant. These smaller varieties include Texas Redbud, Possumhaw Holly, Roughleaf Dogwood, Texas Persimmon, Spicebush and Witch Hazel.

All of these native seedlings benefit local wildlife. Flowering varieties provide nectar for bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Berry producing trees offer small mammals and birds a source of food. All are critical hosts for beneficial insects.

Residents are encouraged to plant a tree on residential property, in community open space reserves and in forest preserves.

This is a FREE event for Woodlands’ residents. Attendees are advised to bring a reusable bag to help transport seedlings. Supplies are limited. For more information, please contact enviro@thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov or visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/arborday.
